Jeff and I made a trip down to Las Vegas last week to visit GlobalShop: the largest retail trade-show in North America. We heart retail and thrive on keeping up to speed on what drives consumer purchasing decisions.  We toured the trade-show floor and listened to many speakers and as always picked up on a few trends.  Here are our takeaways on what today’s shoppers expect from a retail store:


  1. Experiences and a sense of community: Consumers want to have a wonderful experience to connect to their purchase: Rapha Cycle Clubs are great spaces for cyclists to meet, shop for gear, drink & eat and watch events with like-minded individuals.
  2. Hybrid Retail: Combining different types of retail under one roof – West Elm Market & Toms
  3. Think Globally Act Locally: Retail that gives proceeds to charity – Toms

4.  Convenience: Ways to simplify daily activities – Walk-in Cookbook
5.Secret Shops: Customers want to be “in the know” and find hidden gems – Fendi Las Vegas
6.Telling Stories: Shoppers want to know more about what they are purchasing – Monocle
7. The year of the Man:  Store specific to men and men’s hobbies – Bonobos guideshops
8. Size Matters: Scale back the typical square footage and integrate technology and an online store to support the smaller shop -Wells Fargo mini branch.
