Drift

“I was born lost and take no pleasure in being found.” – John Steinbeck

DRIFT, the name inspired by the idea “wander aimlessly,” is a brand for independent travelers. It is do-it-yourself accommodation with a social atmosphere. The first incarnation of the DRIFT brand has manifested itself into a small hotel in San Jose Del Cabo, Baja California Sur, Mexico.

DRIFT has been designed to encourage social gatherings. All rooms open on to a central courtyard. Shared patios and a communal kitchen prompt interaction between guests. DRIFT has also been designed as do-it-yourself. Bookings are done exclusively through AirBNB.

DRIFT is utilitarian, a combination of rustic Baja Ranch and Industrial Loft architecture. It is urban, eclectic, pared back, with a simple palette of poured concrete, custom welded steel and rustic wood. During construction the design process was collaborative with local tradesmen. Endemic materials were used and details were allowed to evolve authentically – flaws and all – helping DRIFT distinguish itself from the uniformity of the global “design” hotel. Concrete sinks mimic water troughs found on local ranches, furniture was made on-site from left over building materials, rooms are sparsely decorated with the exception of a collection of vintage Lucha Wrestling Posters found in Mexico City.
